Reader 1: Advent means ‘arrival’ or ‘coming’ and is a season of anticipation preparing our hearts for and looking forward to Christmas – the celebration of Christ’s birth and first coming.
Reader 2: Today is the first Sunday of Advent and we light one candle representing the prophets’ hope of Christ’s coming.
Reader 1: Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Reader 2: Matthew 1:18-24
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
Reader 2: O Immanuel, Jesus Christ, desire of every nation, Savior of all peoples, come and dwell among us.
Light the first candle.

CONFESSION OF SIN – Psalm 51:1-4
TO THE CHOIRMASTER.
A PSALM OF DAVID,
WHEN NATHAN THE PROPHET WENT TO HIM,
AFTER HE HAD GONE IN TO BATHSHEBA.
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your judgment.
Song –
“Have Mercy on Me” by Dale Bischof and Pat Sczebel
ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Psalm 103:8-12
The LORD is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

Mark your calendars: the Annual Immanuel Christmas Party will be on Friday, December 4th, at The Meeting Place. You won’t want to miss it. More details to come soon…
Lydia is having the Hongs (one of our international missionaries) over to her house for dinner on Monday (11/16) at 6:30 PM. She has room for about 10 more people around her table, so if you want to get to know the Hongs better this would be a great opportunity.
