CONFESSION OF SIN – Romans 7:18-19, 24-25a
I know that nothing good dwells in me,
that is, in my flesh.
For I have the desire to do what is right,
but not the ability to carry it out.
For I do not do the good I want,
but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
Wretched man that I am!
Who will deliver me from this body of death?
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.

And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

I will judge you, O house of Israel,

declares the Lord God.
Repent and turn from all your transgressions,
lest iniquity be your ruin.
Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed,
and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit!
Why will you die, O house of Israel?
For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone,
declares the Lord God;
so turn, and live.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – The Apostles’ Creed
We believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of Heaven and Earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell
and on the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his place.
Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;

Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live.
Song –

CONFESSION OF SIN – Jeremiah 2:11-13
My people have changed their glory
for that which does not profit.
Be appalled, O heavens, at this;
be shocked, be utterly desolate,
declares the Lord,

they have forsaken me,
the fountain of living waters,
and hewed out cisterns for themselves,
broken cisterns that can hold no water.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Micah 7:18-19

and passing over transgression
for the remnant of his inheritance?

He will again have compassion on us;
he will tread our iniquities underfoot.
You will cast all our sins
into the depths of the sea.

Song –

SCRIPTURE READING – 2 Peter 2:17-22
SERMON – “True Freedom”
17 These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm.
For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved.
18 For, speaking loud boasts of folly,
they entice by sensual passions of the flesh
those who are barely escaping from those who live in error.
19 They promise them freedom,
but they themselves are slaves of corruption.
For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.
20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world
through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
they are again entangled in them and overcome,
the last state has become worse for them than the first.
21 For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness
than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.
22 What the true proverb says has happened to them:
“The dog returns to its own vomit,
and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”

It’s a white, cold, January day now, but imagine a warm summer evening with golden beams floating through branches of a Wisconsin forest… bunk beds, campfires, deep blue with white crested waves lapping lazily against a beach, hanging with fellow believers in your church, being encouraged and challenged spiritually…
Mark your calendars for the 2016 Summer Retreat at Lake Geneva Conference Center on August 19-21!
