PRELUDE – “The First Noel” by Chris Rice
WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 33:18-22
LEADER:
Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
that he may deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in famine.
CONGREGATION:
Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
LEADER:
Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.
ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING – Hebrews 9:26-28
Christ has appeared once for all
at the end of the ages
to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
And just as it is appointed for man to die once,
and after that comes judgment,
so Christ,
having been offered once to bear the sins of many,
will appear a second time,
not to deal with sin
but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
Song –
“Angels from the Realms of Glory” by Henry Thomas Smart and James Montgomery
CONFESSION OF SIN – Romans 3:23
All have sinned
and fall short of the glory of God.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON – 2 Corinthians 5:17-19
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.
The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
All this is from God,
who through Christ reconciled us to himself
and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;
that is, in Christ
God was reconciling the world to himself,
not counting their trespasses against them.
Songs –
“Hark the Herald Angels Sing” by Charles Wesley and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy
“Angels We Have Heard On High” by Edward Shippen Barnes and James Chadwick
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God the Father Almighty;
Maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of the Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father;
by whom all things were made;
who, for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven,
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary,
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried
and the third day he rose again,
according to the Scriptures;
and ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of the Father;
and he shall come again, with glory,
to judge both the living and the dead;
whose kingdom shall have no end.
And in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and Giver of Life;
who proceeds from the Father and the Son;
who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified;
who spoke by the Prophets.
And one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;
And I look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING – Philippians 3:20 – 4:1
But our citizenship is in heaven,
and from it we await a Savior,
the Lord Jesus Christ,
who will transform our lowly body
to be like his glorious body,
by the power that enables him
even to subject all things to himself.
Therefore, my brothers,
whom I love and long for,
my joy and crown,
stand firm thus in the Lord,
my beloved.
Song –

CONFESSION OF SIN – 1 Samuel 13:8-13
He waited seven days,
the time appointed by Samuel.
But Samuel did not come to Gilgal,
and the people were scattering from him.
So Saul said,
“Bring the burnt offering here to me,
and the peace offerings.”
And he offered the burnt offering.
As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering,
behold, Samuel came.
And Saul went out to meet him and greet him.
Samuel said, “What have you done?”
And Saul said,
“When I saw that the people were scattering from me,
and that you did not come within the days appointed,
and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash,
I said,
‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal,
and I have not sought the favor of the Lord.’
So I forced myself,
and offered the burnt offering.”
And Samuel said to Saul,
“You have done foolishly.
You have not kept the command of the Lord your God,
with which he commanded you.
