PRELUDE – “Romans 4” by Streetlights

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP – Philippians 2:6-11

Though Christ Jesus was in the form of God,

he did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

but emptied himself,

by taking the form of a servant,

being born in the likeness of men.

And being found in human form,

he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,

even death on a cross.

Therefore God has highly exalted him

and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – 2nd London Baptist Confession of Faith (1689), Chapter 11

Those whom God effectually calls, he also freely justifies,

not by infusing righteousness into them,

but by pardoning their sins,

and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous;

not for anything wrought in them, or done by them,

but for Christ’s sake alone;

not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing,

or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness;

but by imputing Christ’s active obedience unto the whole law,

and passive obedience in his death

for their whole and sole righteousness by faith,

which faith they have not of themselves; it is the gift of God.

Faith thus receiving and resting on Christ and his righteousness,

is the alone instrument of justification;

yet it is not alone in the person justified,

but is ever accompanied with all other saving graces,

and is no dead faith, but works by love.

God continues to forgive the sins of those that are justified,

and although they can never fall from the state of justification,

yet they may, by their sins, fall under God’s fatherly displeasure;

and in that condition

they have not usually the light of his countenance restored unto them,

until they humble themselves,

confess their sins,

beg pardon,

and renew their faith and repentance.

If we say we have no sin,

we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins,

he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins

and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

What do we believe about the Holy Spirit?

That he is God,

coeternal with the Father and the Son.
