PRELUDE —  “Before the Throne of God Above” by Charitie Lees Bancroft and Vikki Cook

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
    will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
    in the fear of you.
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.

CONFESSION OF SIN – Haggai 1:7-11

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways.

Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house,

that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the Lord.

You looked for much, and behold, it came to little.

And when you brought it home, I blew it away.

Why? declares the Lord of hosts.

Because of my house that lies in ruins,

while each of you busies himself with his own house.

Therefore, the heavens above you have withheld the dew,

and the earth has withheld its produce.

And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills,

on the grain, the new wine, the oil,

on what the ground brings forth,

on man and beast,

and on all their labors.”

In light of the ways we ignore the household of God in solely caring for our own welfare, let’s take a moment to repent of our sins and commit ourselves again towards the work of God’s kingdom.

ASSURANCE OF CARE – Matt. 6:25-33

Jesus tells those who have trusted in him in Matt. 6:25-33

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life,

what you will eat or what you will drink,

nor about your body, what you will put on.

Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns,

and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Are you not of more value than they?

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[g]

And why are you anxious about clothing?

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,

yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

But if God so clothes the grass of the field,

which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Therefore do not be anxious, saying,

‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

For the Gentiles seek after all these things,

and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,

and all these things will be added to you.
