PRELUDE –

“You Hold It All Together” by All Sons and Daughters

CALL TO WORSHIP – (Psalm 98:7-9) (Arthur)

The Psalmist commands all creation in Psalm 98:7-9 saying

Let the sea resound, and everything in it,

    the world, and all who live in it.

Let the rivers clap their hands,

    let the mountains sing together for joy;

let them sing before the Lord,

    for he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world in righteousness

    and the peoples with equity.

Let’s celebrate the King who comes in righteousness and justice!

(congregation stands)

SONG –

All Praise to Him” by Bob Kauflin and Matt Merker

CONFESSION OF SIN

Although the Lord truly is a King of righteousness and justice, he is also a God of immense mercy and forgiveness. If you today are feeling the weight and guilt of shame, the Lord today is inviting you to find your refuge from judgment in him. As a church, let’s pray this prayer out loud, asking God to once again forgive us of our sin and restore sinners like us into right relationship with himself. Pray with me out loud.

(Everyone Read Aloud)

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image, through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.

(Moment of Silence)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – (Luke 5:20)

To all who repent of their sins and seek refuge in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ on their behalf, the Lord himself declares,

“Your sins are forgiven.”

Let’s continue to praise the Lord for his marvelous salvation.

SONG –

To The Cross I Cling” by Isaac Wimberley, Matt Boswell, and Michael Bleecker

SONG –

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” by John Wyeth and Robert Robinson

SCRIPTURE READING – Psalm 16 Instruct the Congregation to Stand. End with “This is the Word of the Lord.”

(congregation stands)

A Miktam of David.

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;

    I have no good apart from you.”

As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,

    in whom is all my delight.

The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;

    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out

    or take their names on my lips.

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;

    you hold my lot.

The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;

    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;

    in the night also my heart instructs me.

I have set the Lord always before me;

    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;

    my flesh also dwells secure.

For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,

    or let your holy one see corruption.

You make known to me the path of life;

    in your presence there is fullness of joy;

    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 24:7-10

Lift up your heads, O gates!

    And be lifted up, O ancient doors,

    that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

    The Lord, strong and mighty,

    the Lord, mighty in battle!

Lift up your heads, O gates!

    And lift them up, O ancient doors,

    that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

    The Lord of hosts,

    he is the King of glory!

SONG –

All Creatures of Our God and King” by Jonathan Baird, Ryan Baird, St. Francis of Assisi, and William Henry Draper

CONFESSION OF SIN – Mark 14:61-64

“Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?’

And Jesus said, ‘I am,

and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power,

and coming with the clouds of heaven.’

And the high priest tore his garments and said,

‘What further witnesses do we need?

You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?’

And they all condemned him as deserving death.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Ephesians 2:4-8

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,

even when we were dead in our trespasses,

made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him

and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace

in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

For by grace you have been saved through faith.

And this is not your own doing;

it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

PRAYER & CHILDREN’S DISMISSAL

(Please be seated for prayer. Children ages 0-5 may be dismissed for Kid’s Corner after the prayer.)

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Apostle’s Creed

(everyone read aloud)

We believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried.

He descended into hell*

and on the third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,**

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen.

* Meaning place of the dead

** Meaning universal

SONG –

Sing to the King” by Billy Foote

SCRIPTURE READING – Psalm 47

(please stand for the reading of God’s Word and respond with, “Thanks be to God”)

Clap your hands, all peoples!

    Shout to God with loud songs of joy!

For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared,

    a great king over all the earth.

He subdued peoples under us,

    and nations under our feet.

He chose our heritage for us,

    the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah

God has gone up with a shout,

    the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.

Sing praises to God, sing praises!

    Sing praises to our King, sing praises!

For God is the King of all the earth;

    sing praises with a psalm!

God reigns over the nations;

    God sits on his holy throne.

The princes of the peoples gather

    as the people of the God of Abraham.

For the shields of the earth belong to God;

    he is highly exalted!

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 33:1-4

The Psalmist cries out to the people of God stating,

Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous!

Praise befits the upright.

Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre;

Make melody to him with the harp of ten strings!

Sing to him a new song;

Play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

For the word of the LORD is upright,

And all his work is done in faithfulness.

SONG –

All Praise to Him” by Bob Kauflin and Matt Merker

CONFESSION OF SIN

Gracious God,

we confess that we have longed too much for the comforts of this world.

We have loved the gifts more than the giver.

In your mercy, help us to see

that all the things we pine for are shadows, but you are substance;

that they are quicksands, but you are mountain;

that they are shifting, but you are anchor.

We plead your forgiveness on the merits of Jesus Christ.

Accept his worthiness for our unworthiness, his sinlessness for our transgressions,

his fullness for our emptiness, his glory for our shame,

his righteousness for our dead works, his death for our life.

We pray in Jesus name.

Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Psalm 103:12-14

as far as the east is from the west,

    so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

As a father shows compassion to his children,

    so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

For he knows our frame;

    he remembers that we are dust.

How Great Thou Art” by Stuart K. Hine

SCRIPTURE READING – James 4:13-17 Instruct the Congregation to Stand. End with “This is the Word of the Lord.”

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

SONG –

10,000 Reasons” by Jonas Myrin and Matt Redman

CONFESSION OF SIN – James 4:4,7-10

Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?

Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world

makes himself an enemy of God…

Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

 Be wretched and mourn and weep.

Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Romans 5:8-10

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood,

much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,

much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus” by Charles Crozat Converse and Joseph Medlicott Scriven

SCRIPTURE READING – 2 Timothy 4:9-22

(please stand for the reading of God’s Word and respond with, “Thanks be to God”)

Do your best to come to me soon. For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Greet Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus.Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.

 The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.

CONFESSION OF SIN

(Everyone Read Aloud)

Almighty and merciful God,

 we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.

We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.

We have left undone those things which we ought to have done.

O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare those who confess their faults.

Restore those who are penitent,

according to your promises declared to the world in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

And grant, O merciful God, for his sake,

 that we may live a holy, just, and humble life

to the glory of your holy name.

Amen

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Heidelberg Catechism Question 1

Q. Christian, what is your only comfort in life and death?

A. That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death,

to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood,

and has set me free from all the power of the devil.

He also preserves me in such a way

that without the will of my heavenly Father

not a hair can fall from my head;

indeed, all things must work together for my salvation.

Therefore, by His Holy Spirit He also assures me of eternal life

and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for Him.
