PRELUDE – “Safe Retreat” by Kings Kaleidoscope

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP – (Nicene Creed)

For our sake [Christ] was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

Song –

CONFESSION OF SIN  – Isa. 6:1-5

In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up;

and the train of his robe filled the temple.

Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face,

and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

 And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”

And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called,

and the house was filled with smoke.

And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips,

and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;

for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

In light of the vision of God’s holy splendor it is only right for us reflect upon our sin and repent

[silent space to engage with God…]

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Hear this assurance of pardon from Isaiah 6:6-7

Then one of the seraphim flew to me,

having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar.

And he touched my mouth and said:

“Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

“As I looked, thrones were placed,

and the Ancient of Days took his seat;

his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool;

his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.

A stream of fire issued and came out from before him;

a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him;

the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.

CONFESSION OF SIN – Matt. 2:16-18

Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:

“A voice was heard in Ramah,

weeping and loud lamentation,

Rachel weeping for her children;

she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”

 Jan. 22. 1973, the Supreme Court legalized abortion on demand in all 50 states. Since then churches across the states have set aside the third Sunday of the month as a day to commemorate the unborn lives lost due to this edict, and celebrate the Lord’s good gift of human life with the intent to preserve and protect all humanity through all stages of life.

In light of this, let us take some time to pray to our God, repenting for the sins of this nation and our implicit selfishness which turns our eyes away from those who need us most.

[silent space to engage with God…]

ASSURANCE OF PARDON  –

Here the prophetic words of comfort from Jeremiah 31:16-20

Thus says the Lord:

“Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears,

for there is a reward for your work, declares the Lord,

and they shall come back from the land of the enemy.

There is hope for your future, declares the Lord,

and your children shall come back to their own country.

I have heard Ephraim grieving,

‘You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined, like an untrained calf;

bring me back that I may be restored, for you are the Lord my God.

For after I had turned away, I relented, and after I was instructed, I struck my thigh;

I was ashamed, and I was confounded, because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’

Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he my darling child?

For as often as I speak against him, I do remember him still.

Therefore my heart yearns for him;

I will surely have mercy on him,

declares the Lord.

XVIII. Of the World to Come.

[We believe] That the end of this world is approaching:

that at the last day, Christ will descend from heaven,

and raise the dead from the grave to final retribution;

 that a solemn separation will then take place;

that the wicked will be adjudged to endless punishment,

and the righteous to endless joy;

and that the judgement will fix forever the final state of men in heaven and hell,

on principles of righteousness.

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP  – Psalm 75

We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near.
We recount your wondrous deeds.

“At the set time that I appoint I will judge with equity.
When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars.
I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn;
do not lift up your horn on high, or speak with haughty neck.’”

For not from the east or from the westand not from the wilderness comes lifting up,
but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another.
For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed,
and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs.

But I will declare it forever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.
All the horns of the wicked I will cut off, but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.

 Song –

CONFESSION OF SIN (Micah 6:8) –

He has told you, O man, what is good;and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,and to walk humbly with your God?

For our failure to walk according to the statutes of the Lord, let us pray together this confession of our sins, seeking pardon and refuge in the precious blood of Christ.

(Read Together)

Almighty God, we acknowledge and confess

that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed;

we have not loved you with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength;

we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves.

Deepen within us our sorrow for the wrong we have done,

and the good we have left undone.

Lord, you are full of compassion and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in

mercy; there is always forgiveness with you!

Restore to us the joy of your salvation;

bind up that which is broken,

give light to our minds, strength to our wills, and rest to our souls.

Speak to each of us, and let your word abide with us

until it has wrought in us your holy will.

Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –

For our sins and for our salvation, Christ has come proclaiming in John 6:35-40

“I am the bread of life;

whoever comes to me shall not hunger,

and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.

 All that the Father gives me will come to me,

and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will

but the will of him who sent me.

And this is the will of him who sent me,

that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me,

but raise it up on the last day.

For this is the will of my Father,

that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life,

and I will raise him up on the last day.”

WELCOME & CALL TO WORSHIP

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,on them has light shone.

You have multiplied the nation;
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before youas with joy at the harvest,
as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

 For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor,you have broken as on the day of Midian.
For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

 Of the increase of his government and of peacethere will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousnessfrom this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Song –

Come Thou Long Expected Jesus” by Charles Wesley

CONFESSION OF SIN (Ezekiel 9:8-10) –

“Alas, Sovereign Lord!

Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel

in this outpouring of your wrath on Jerusalem?”

He answered me, “The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great;

the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice.

They say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord does not see.’

So I will not look on them with pity or spare them,

but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done.”

In light of our sin, let us call to the Lord out of our despair and place our hope in his character of mercy.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –

Hear this proclamation of pardon from Ephesians 1:3-10

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world

to be holy and blameless in his sight.

In love hepredestined us for adoption to sonshipthrough Jesus Christ,

in accordance with his pleasure and will—

to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,

 in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us.

With all wisdom and understanding,

he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure,

which he purposed in Christ,

to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—

to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

Affirmation of Faith (Nicene Creed)

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of the Father before all worlds;

God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God;

begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father,

by whom all things were made.

Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven,

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;

He suffered and was buried;

and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures;

and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father;

 and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead;

whose kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life;

who proceeds from the Father and the Son;

who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified;

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;

and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN

 John 3:19-21

 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world,

 and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light,

lest his works should be exposed.

But whoever does what is true comes to the light,

so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

1 John 3:1-3

See what kind of love the Father has given to us,

that we should be called children of God; and so we are.

The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared;

but we know that when he appearswe shall be like him,

because we shall see him as he is.

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse!

and in righteousness he judges and makes war.

His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems,

and he has a name written that no one knows but himself.

He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood,

and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.

And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure,

were following him on white horses.

From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations,

and he will rule them with a rod of iron.

He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.

On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.

CONFESSION OF SIN –

Luke 3:2-6

the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

 And he went into all the region around the Jordan,

proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

Prepare the way of the Lord,

make his paths straight.

Every valley shall be filled,

and every mountain and hill shall be made low,

and the crooked shall become straight,

and the rough places shall become level ways,

and all flesh shall seethe salvation of God.’”

In light of the coming of the Kingdom of God, let’s take a moment to repent, and to prepare our hearts for the coming of our Lord.

CONFESSION OF SIN- From Calvin’s Geneva Liturgy of 1543

Lord God,

eternal and almighty Father:

We acknowledge before your holy majesty that we are poor sinners,

conceived and born in guilt and in corruption,

prone to do evil,

unable of our own power to do good.

Because of our sin,

we endlessly violate your holy commandments.

But, O Lord, with heartfelt sorrow we repent

and turn away from all our offenses.

We condemn ourselves and our evil ways, with true sorrow

asking that your grace will relieve our distress.

Have compassion on us, most gracious God, Father of mercies,

for the sake of your son Jesus Christ our Lord.

And in removing our guilt,

also grant us daily increase of the grace of your Holy Spirit,

and produce in us the fruits of holiness and of righteousness

pleasing in your sight:

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON- Deuteronomy 30:4-6

If your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven,

from there the LORD your God will gather you,

that you may possess it.

And he will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers.

And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring,

that you may live.”
