PRELUDE –

“Lord’s Prayer” by Liturgical Folk

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 96:9-10

“Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness;

    tremble before him, all the earth.

Say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns.’

    The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;

    he will judge the peoples with equity.”

Let’s stand and sing to the Lord, the ruler and judge of all the earth!

SONG –

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” by Joachim Neander

CONFESSION OF SIN – from the Book of Common Prayer 1552

David writes in Psalm 24 that it is only those with clean hands and pure hearts who can ascend the holy hill of the Lord. In light of this, let’s take a moment in our service now to confess our sins to God and ask him to forgive us of our sins once again and cleanse us from all iniquity. Please pray with me this confession of sin aloud:

(everyone aloud)

Almighty God,

      unto whom all hearts are open,

      all desires known,

      and from whom no secrets are hidden—

      cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

      by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

      so that we may perfectly love you,

      and worthily magnify your holy name;

      through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

(moment of silence)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Psalm 32:1-2

“Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,

    whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,

    and in whose spirit there is no deceit.”

Let’s continue to sing, for through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, He has made his people clean!

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – From the Immanuel Baptist Church Statement of Faith Paragraph XII.

(everyone read aloud)

We believe that the Law of God is the eternal and unchangeable rule of His moral government; that it is holy, just, and good; and that the inability which the Scriptures ascribe to fallen men to fulfill its precepts, arises entirely from their love of sin: to deliver them from which, and to restore them through a Mediator to unfeigned obedience to the holy Law, is one great end of the Gospel, and of the Means of Grace connected with the establishment of the visible church.

SCRIPTURE READING – Proverbs 19:1-29  Please announce the page number (P. 541) in the pew Bibles in the back. Instruct the congregation to stand. End with “This is the Word of the Lord.”

Calling – The calling of God to salvation happens in two ways: externally through the proclamation of the gospel and internally through the Holy Spirit working in the heart of the person who hears. Both of these callings are essential, and both work together to bring someone to faith in Christ (2 Tim. 1:8-10).

PRELUDE –

“Christ The Sure And Steady Anchor” by Matt Boswell

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 134:1-2

“Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord,

    who stand by night in the house of the Lord!

Lift up your hands to the holy place

    and bless the Lord!”

Let’s stand together and bless the holy name of the Lord!

SONG –

Great Is Thy Faithfulness” by Thomas Obediah Chisholm and William Marion Runyan

CONFESSION OF SIN – Micah 6:6, 8

In Micah 6, God’s people come to Micah the prophet and ask him,

“With what shall I come before the LORD,

And bow myself before God on high?

Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,

With calves a year old?”

The prophet Micah responds to the people in verse 8 saying,

“He has told you, O man, what is good;

And what does the LORD require of you

But to do justice, and to love kindness

And to walk humbly with your God?”

As we meditate on the precepts of the LORD this morning, let’s use this moment of silence in our service to confess to the Lord the many ways we have failed to live up to God’s justice and kindness and to acknowledge the various ways we fail to walk humbly with the LORD our God.

(moment of silence)

SONG –

Create in Me a Clean Heart” by Keith Green

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Romans 5:8-11

After acknowledging our sin before the Lord our God,

God’s people can now receive his comfort as we hear this assurance of pardon from Romans 5:8-11:

“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”

Let’s continue to sing, for through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God himself has reconciled his people back to him!

Here are this week’s Announcements:

  • This Thursday is the last Midweek Service of the summer!  Come out to The Meeting Place at 6:45 PM to sing, pray, and look at Acts 12 together.
  • This Sunday some students will be back and we’ll be going through Proverbs 17.
  • We use the metaphor of ‘sailors’ and ‘longshoremen’ to talk about our church vision.  Some people are here for a bit, grow in the gospel, and then go off all around the world.  These are the ‘sailors’ and we love them!  Some people are here longer and call Chicago home and we need them too.  These are the ‘longshoremen.’  This Sunday after the service we’re having a Longshoremen’s Luncheon at the Lins’ just to encourage the ‘longshoremen’ in their unique role.  If you’re planning to come, just send me a quick email to let me know so I can order the right amount of food.
  • If you have been coming to Immanuel for awhile and are interested in becoming part of us, go through Joining the Mission online and come to the next Mission Class after service on 8/27.
  • There’s a Worship Team there’s a meeting on 8/27 at Pastor Theo’s at 6:30 PM.
  • Got the IBC App?  You’ll need it!  Download here.

Week 33

Election – Election is the eternal and gracious purpose of God, according to which He regenerates, justifies, sanctifies, and glorifies sinners (Eph. 1:4-6). It is consistent with the free agency of man and comprehends all the means in connection with the end. It is the glorious display of God’s sovereign goodness and is infinitely wise, holy, and unchangeable. It excludes boasting and promotes humility.

PRELUDE –

“Great Are You Lord” by All Sons and Daughters

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 100

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
    Serve the Lord with gladness!
    Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the Lord, he is God!
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
    and his courts with praise!
    Give thanks to him; bless his name!

For the Lord is good;
    his steadfast love endures forever,
    and his faithfulness to all generations.”

Let’s stand and sing to the Lord,

The fount of all our hope and blessings!

SONG –

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” by John Wyeth and Robert Robinson

CONFESSION OF SIN – Adapted from a prayer written by Samuel Johnson

In light of God’s goodness towards us, let’s take a moment in our service now to pray and repent of our sinful ingratitude. Please pray with me aloud this confession of sin:

(everyone aloud)

“O Lord, in whose hands are life and death, by whose power we are sustained, and by whose mercy we are spared—look down upon us with pity. Forgive us that we have until now so much neglected the duty which you have assigned to us, and suffered the days and hours of which we must give account to pass away without any endeavor to accomplish your will. Make us to remember, O God, that every day is your gift, and ought to be used according to your command. Grant us, therefore, so to repent of our negligence, that we may obtain mercy from you, and pass the time which you shall yet allow us in diligent performance of your commands, through Jesus Christ.

Amen.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – John 1:12-13 (Chris T.)

In spite of our sin, the word of the Lord assures everyone who has placed their faith in Christ in John 1:12-13 saying:

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name,

he gave the right to become children of God,

who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man,

but of God.”

Let’s continue to praise the Lord today,

For in Christ, God our Father delights in his children this morning!

    break forth into joyous song and sing praises!

Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,

    with the lyre and the sound of melody!

With trumpets and the sound of the horn

    make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!”

Let’s stand and sing praises to the Lord our God the Ruler and King over all the earth!

SONG –

CONFESSION OF SIN – James 4:6-10

“Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.”

In light of the awesome sovereignty of God, let’s take a moment as a church to repent of our rebellion against our king and humble ourselves before the mighty hand of God!

(moment of silence)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Romans 8:31-39

And now hear these words of assurance which is promises to everyone who humbles themselves under the mighty hand of God from Romans 8:31-39.

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,

‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.’

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Let’s continue to sing of the steadfast mercies of our Savior!

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 19:7-11; 14

“The law of the Lord is perfect,

    reviving the soul;

the testimony of the Lord is sure,

    making wise the simple;

the precepts of the Lord are right,

    rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the Lord is pure,

    enlightening the eyes;

the fear of the Lord is clean,

    enduring forever;

the rules of the Lord are true,

    and righteous altogether.

More to be desired are they than gold,

    even much fine gold;

sweeter also than honey

    and drippings of the honeycomb.

Moreover, by them is your servant warned;

    in keeping them there is great reward.

(everyone aloud)

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

    be acceptable in your sight,

    O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

(congregation stands)

SONG –

Speak, O Lord” by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend

CONFESSION OF SIN – By Henry Thorton

As we’ve just asked the Lord to speak his Word to his people this morning,

Let’s also take some time in our service now to prepare our hearts by confessing our sins and seeking his forgiveness. Let’s pray this prayer of confession aloud:

(everyone read aloud)

We have great reason, O Lord, to be humbled before you, on account of the coldness and insensibility of our hearts, the disorder and irregularity of our lives, and the prevalence of worldly affections within us. Too often have we indulged the tempers which we ought to have subdued, and have left our duty unperformed. O Lord, be merciful to us for your Son Jesus Christ’s sake. Produce in us deep repentance, and a lively faith in that Savior who has died for our sins, and risen again for our justification.

Amen.

SONG –

Give us Clean Hands” by Charlie Hall

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Psalm 103:8, 10-14

“The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. . . . He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.”

Let’s continue to sing, for the word of the Lord has assured God’s people of his merciful pardon!

  • And if you’re not volunteering at the medical trailer or another Serve Tour project, consider coming to help Phil put up the trim in the Kids’ Corner this Saturday from 8:00 AM to noon.
  • It would mean a lot to me (and I think be encouraging to you) if you came out to the City-Wide Celebration Service this Saturday at Broadview MBC to worship together with other Chicagoland Baptists, celebrate what happened across the city this weekend through the Serve Tour, and think about next steps for our city.  There’s a free dinner at 5:00 PM.  Worship starts at 6:00 PM.  And there will be a churro truck and coffee afterwards

Week 31

Aspects of The Atonement – Christ’s substitutionary death on our behalf stands at the center of His atoning work. Without this work, there is no gospel (1 Cor. 15:3). While this substitutionary aspect is central to the atonement, His death also supremely demonstrates God’s love for sinners (Jn. 15:13; 1 Jn. 4:10). It shows us how seriously God takes sin. It satisfies every requirement for God to be able to forgive the failures of humanity. And it puts Christ’s cosmic victory over sin, Satan, and death on display through His resurrection (Col. 2:15). Every aspect of the atonement should inspire gratitude, praise, and a desire for obedience, because it is only through Christ that we are reconciled to God.
