“Praise the LORD, all nations!

Extol him, all peoples!

 For great is his steadfast love toward us,

and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.

Praise the LORD!”

and extol his greatness for all people to hear!

CONFESSION OF SIN – A confession written by Samuel Johnson

In Galatians 6:1, God’s word instructs his people to keep watch on ourselves lest we too be tempted by sin and transgression. In light of God’s instruction, let’s use this time in our service to individually examine our hearts before the Lord and confess our own hidden iniquities before him. Please pray aloud with me this confession of sin written by the Anglican writer Samuel Johnson:

(everyone aloud)

“Almighty and most merciful Father, you hate nothing that you have made, nor desire the death of a sinner—look down with mercy upon me, and grant that I may turn from my wickedness and live. Forgive the days and years which I have passed in folly, idleness, and sin. Fill me with such sorrow for the time misspent, that I may amend my life according to your holy Word; strengthen me against habitual idleness, and enable me to direct my thoughts to the performance of every duty; that while I live I may serve you in the state to which you shall call me, and at last by a holy and happy death be delivered from the struggles and sorrows of this life, and obtain eternal happiness by your mercy, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.”

(moment of silence)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –  Isaiah 53:4-6

And after confessing our sins before the Lord,

God’s people can once again receive his comfort as we hear in Isaiah 53 how Jesus Christ has brought comfort to his people!

“Surely he has borne our griefs

and carried our sorrows;

yet we esteemed him stricken,

smitten by God, and afflicted.

But he was pierced for our transgressions;

he was crushed for our iniquities;

upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,

and with his wounds we are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray;

we have turned—every one—to his own way;

and the LORD has laid on him

the iniquity of us all.”

Let’s continue to sing, for through his cross, Christ has purchased our peace!

for his steadfast love endures forever!

or declare all his praise?

Blessed are they who observe justice,

who do righteousness at all times!”

CONFESSION OF SIN – Psalm 51:10-12, 14

In Psalm 106, the psalmist states that it is only the righteous who can rightfully worship the holy God in his presence. However, even back then, God’s people were aware of their sin and their inability to approach his presence on the basis of their merit alone. This is why David, after being confronted with his sin, prays to the Lord in Psalm 51 stating:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God,

    and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from your presence,

    and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,

    and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,

    O God of my salvation,

    and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.”

Like David, you and I need God’s mercy and grace

to cleanse us of our sins before we can rightfully stand before his presence.

As we reflect on the prayer of David this morning, let’s also use this moment in our service to confess our own sins before the Lord and appeal to the Lord once again to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(moment of silence)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –  1 John 1:5-9

“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Brothers and sisters, let’s stand with confidence in the presence of God this morning, for through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, God himself has washed away our sin and cleansed us from all unrighteousness!

Week 37

Regeneration – Regeneration occurs at the beginning of the Christian life and is the miraculous transformation, or the new birth, that takes place within an individual through the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit (John 3:3-8; Titus 3:5). It is the divine side of conversion (a person turning to Christ in repentance and faith), being the work of God within a person’s life that causes him or her to be born again, a work that human effort is unable to produce.

CONFESSION OF SIN – Book Of Common Prayer 1552

As we are reminded of how great and glorious the Lord our God is, let’s also take a moment in our service to reflect over our week and repent of every trace and hint of sin in our hearts. Please pray with me aloud using this confession of sin from the Book of Common Prayer.

(everyone aloud)

“Almighty God,

      unto whom all hearts are open,

      all desires known,

      and from whom no secrets are hidden—

      cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

      by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

      so that we may perfectly love you,

      and worthily magnify your holy name;

      through Christ our Lord.

Amen.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –  Hebrews 10:19-23

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.”

Let’s continue to worship, for Jesus Christ has cleansed his people by the shedding of his precious blood!

Week 36

Faith – Biblical faith is the resting, or trusting, in Christ alone for salvation (John 3:16-21). More than being simply a mental agreement with historical facts, genuine faith begins with a recognition and confession of the truth of the gospel (1 John 4:13-16), followed by a receiving of Christ as Lord and Savior of one’s life (John 1:10-13). Biblical faith is not blind faith, for it rests on the historical life, death, and resurrection of Christ.

CONFESSION OF SIN – written from Zacharias Ursinus

“I, a poor sinner, confess before you, my God and Creator, that I have sinned gravely and in various ways against you, not only with outward gross sins, but much more with internal, innate blindness, unbelief, doubts, faintheartedness, impatience, pride, evil greed, secret envy, hatred and jealousy, as well as other evil emotions.  You, my Lord and God, recognize this in me very well, but sadly I cannot recognize them sufficiently.  I feel sorrow and regret for them and wholeheartedly desire grace through your dear Son Jesus Christ.

Amen.”
