PRELUDE –

“Christ is Risen” by Matt Maher

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 96:1-6

Through his Word, God himself calls his people to worship saying:

Oh sing to the Lord a new song;

    sing to the Lord, all the earth!

Sing to the Lord, bless his name;

    tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations,

    his marvelous works among all the peoples!

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;

    he is to be feared above all gods.

For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,

    but the Lord made the heavens.

Splendor and majesty are before him;

    strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Let’s stand and together bless the name of the Lord!

SONG –

Immortal Invisible God Only Wise” by Walter Chalmers Smith

CONFESSION OF SIN – Written by George Matheson

As we proclaim the light of God’s glory with our song, let’s also take this moment in our service to confess the darkness of sin which lies deep within our hearts. Please pray aloud with me this confession of sin written by Scottish minister George Matheson.

(everyone aloud)

“O Lord, as long as I am apart from you, I am self-satisfied, because I have no standard by which to measure my low stature. But when I come near to you, there for the first time I see myself. In your light I behold my darkness. In your purity I behold my corruption. My very confession of sin is the fruit of holiness. Oh! Divine Man, let me gaze on you more and more until, in the vision of your brightness, I loathe the sight of my impurity; until, in the blaze of that glory which human eye has not seen, I fall prostrate, blinded, broken, to rise again a new man in you.

Amen.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – 1 John 1:5-9

“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Let’s continue to sing, for through the blood of Christ,

God’s people can now fellowship with him in his light!

Week 43

Glorification – Glorification is the final stage in the order of salvation (Rom. 8:30). It refers to the future time when a Christian reaches moral and spiritual perfection at the time of Christ’s return (Ph. 1:9-11; Col. 1:22). Glorification also involves the physical perfection that we will have once our bodies have been raised immortal. When we are glorified, we will have a fuller knowledge and understanding of God and His Word (Ph. 3:20-21; 1Cor. 13:12).

Week 42

Sanctification – After we are justified by faith (declared to be in right standing with God on account of the righteousness of Christ) we undergo a lifetime of sanctification where we are continually made more like Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:16-26; 2Thess. 2:13). Scripture speaks of sanctification as a present position (we have already been sanctified) and as a continuing process (Rom. 6:19; 1Thess. 4:3ff). Sanctification affects the whole of a person, transforming one’s heart, mind, and character to reflect that of Jesus.

PRELUDE –

“Your Glory/Nothing But The Blood” by All Sons and Daughters

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 95:1-2

In Psalm 95:1-2 the Word of the Lord calls all of God’s people to worship when it states:

“Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;

let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song.”

Let’s stand and give thanks to the Lord, the Rock of our salvation!

SONG –

Behold, Our God” by Jonathan, Meghan, and Ryan Baird and Mark Altrogge

CONFESSION OF SIN – Isaiah 6:5

In light of God’s holiness and majesty,

The prophet Isaiah fell down before the throne of God and declared,

“Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”

This is the realization that we all should have whenever we come close to the throne of a holy God. Because God is holy and perfect, none of us can say that we deserve to stand before his presence. We, too, are a people of unclean lips, and the only thing that sinners like us can do is confess our sins before the Lord and ask that he once again have mercy on un for our transgressions. So during this brief time of silence, let’s use this space in our service to once again bring our sin before the Lord and humbly ask for his forgiveness and grace.

(moment of silence)

SONG –

No More My God (I Boast No More)” by Isaac Watts and Sandra McCracken

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Titus 3:4-7

After turning from our sins and trusting in Christ, God’s people can now receive by faith his assurance of our pardon. As the Word of God declares in Titus 3:4-7,

“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

Let’s continue to sing, for through the life, death, and resurrection of our Savior, God has washed away our sins!

SONG –

Jesus, Thank You” by Pat Sczebel

PRAYER

(everyone aloud)

“Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come.

Your will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

As we forgive our debtors.

And do not lead us into temptation,

But deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

    praise him with lute and harp!

(everyone aloud)

CONFESSION OF SIN – Psalm 90:9-12

In Psalm 90:12, Moses prays and asks the Lord,

“So teach us to number our days
    that we may get a heart of wisdom.”

In light of the finite nature of our lives, let’s take a moment to pray, confessing our sins before the Lord, and preparing our hearts for the day of his imminent judgment. Please pray aloud together this confession of sin written by the Anglican writer Samuel Johnson.

(everyone aloud)

“Almighty and most merciful Father, you hate nothing that you have made, nor desire the death of a sinner—look down with mercy upon me, and grant that I may turn from my wickedness and live. Forgive the days and years which I have passed in folly, idleness, and sin. Fill me with such sorrow for the time misspent, that I may amend my life according to your holy Word; strengthen me against habitual idleness, and enable me to direct my thoughts to the performance of every duty; that while I live I may serve you in the state to which you shall call me, and at last by a holy and happy death be delivered from the struggles and sorrows of this life, and obtain eternal happiness by your mercy, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –  1 John 2:1-2

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, “Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”

Because Jesus Christ always stands before God as our advocate,

God’s people, who have received his salvation by faith, can now stand in his presence not as sinners condemned to judgment but as beloved sons and daughters of the most high God.

Let’s continue to celebrate, for the presence of God is with his people both now and forevermore!

SONG –

Christ Is Mine Forevermore” by Jonny Robinson, Rich Thompson

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Apostles’ Creed

(everyone aloud)

We believe in God

the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth;

and in Jesus Christ

his only Son our Lord,

who was conceived

by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead,

and buried.

 He descended into hell

and on the third day

he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand

of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come

to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Week 41

Adoption – Adoption into God’s family is one of the positive benefits of justification. Not only are we pardoned from the judgment against us, but we also experience a change of identity –  sons and daughters of God (John 1:12; Gal. 4:5). Through adoption our relationship with God, which was once lost through the fall, is now restored, resulting in the benefits of being an heir of God and a co-heir with Christ (Rom. 8:16-17).

PRELUDE –

“Anchor of My Soul” by Josh Garrels

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 107:17-22

“Some were fools through their sinful ways,
    and because of their iniquities suffered affliction;
they loathed any kind of food,
    and they drew near to the gates of death.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
    and he delivered them from their distress.
He sent out his word and healed them,
    and delivered them from their destruction.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!”

Let’s stand and give thanks to the Lord for his steadfast love,

As we sing aloud of his great salvation!

SONG –

O Great God” by Bob Kauflin

CONFESSION OF SIN – 2 Peter 3:9-10

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.”

Knowing that the day of the Lord is coming soon, let’s make the most of God’s mercy today as we humbly repent of our sins and return to the Lord who is patiently waiting to be gracious to his people again! Take some time in our service here to silently pray and do business with God.

(moment of silence)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –  2 Corinthians 5:17

And to all who repent of their sins and have grasped on to Jesus Christ by faith,

The Lord himself assures his people in 2 Corinthians 5:17:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Let’s continue to sing, for through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus,

God himself has made his people new!

Week 40

Imputation – When God pardoned sinners at the cross, our sins were imputed or transferred to Christ, who became sin on our behalf. Our sin was imputed to Christ, and Christs righteousness was imputed to us (Rom. 5:17; 1 Cor. 1:30). When God the Father looks at those who have trusted in Christ, He does not see their sins but the righteousness of Christ as belonging to them (Rom. 4:6).
