PRELUDE –

“Swallowed up Death” by Coram Deo Church

CALL TO WORSHIP – Isaiah 25:9 and a quote from Cyril of Jerusalem

Regarding the coming of the Messiah,

The Prophet Isaiah writes:

“It will be said on that day,

    “Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us.

    This is the Lord; we have waited for him;

    let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”

As the Apostolic Father Cyril of Jerusalem explains:

“We preach not one advent only of Christ, but a second also, far more glorious than the former… In His first coming, He endured the cross, despising shame; in His second, He comes attended by a host of angels, receiving glory. We rest not upon His first advent only, but look also for His second. And as at His first coming, we said, ‘Blessed is He that comes in the Name of the Lord,’ so will we repeat the same at His second coming; that when with angels we meet our Master, we may worship Him and say, ‘Blessed is He that comes in the Name of the Lord.’”

As we light this first candle of Christmas this morning,

Let’s stand together and sing,

As we celebrate and anticipate the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

SONG –

O Come O Come Emmanuel” by John Mason Neale and Thomas Helmore

CONFESSION OF SIN – 1 Thessalonains 4:14-18

“For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”

As we reflect on the imminent return of Christ,

Let’s take a moment in our service now to confess our sins to the Lord,

Asking for his purification from sin so that we might stand in that day without shame

Ready to welcome Jesus Christ our king!

(moment of silence)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –  Titus 3:4-7 (Theo)

“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

Let’s continue to sing,

For those who are in Jesus Christ by faith have been saved,

Not by works done by us, but according to the mercies of God!

Jesus, Thank You” by Pat Sczebel

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Nicene Creed

(everyone aloud)

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of the Father before all worlds;

God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God;

begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made;

who for us and for our salvation, came down from heaven,

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;

He suffered and was buried;

and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures,

and ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father;

and He shall come again, with glory, to judge both the living and the dead;

whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of Life;

who proceeds from the Father and the Son;

who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified;

who spoke by the prophets;

and we believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church;

we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins;

and we look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

Week 47

Lord’s Supper – The Lord’s Supper (or Lord’s Table or Communion or the Eucharist) is a deeply symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming (1Cor. 11:26).  It is a means of grace whereby we experience our union with Christ in a profound way (1Cor. 10:16)).  It is also meant to be a picture of the unity that we have together in Christ (1Cor. 10:17).

PRELUDE –

“Vulnerable” by Bridge Music

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 47:5-7

“I will bless the Lord at all times;

    his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul makes its boast in the Lord;

    let the humble hear and be glad.

Oh, magnify the Lord with me,

    and let us exalt his name together!”

Let’s stand together and sing,

And let us exalt the name of the Lord together!

SONG –

Immortal Invisible God Only Wise” by Walter Chalmers Smith

CONFESSION OF SIN – Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

After reflecting on the vanities of this life and the depths of the wisdom of God,

The author of Ecclesiastes wraps up his reflection by exhorting God’s people in chapter 12:13-14:

“The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.”

In light of the infinite depths of our God and our smallness before his presence,

Lets take a moment in our service to humbly confess our sins before Lord,

For he will bring every deed, with every secret thing into judgement.

(moment of silence)

SONG –

Be Magnified” by Lynn DeShazo

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –  Adapted from Psalm 103:8, 10-14

In spite of our weakness, in spite of our sin, God himself gives mercy to all people who humbly repent and trust in Christ Jesus. As the Psalmist writes,

“The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. . . . He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.”

Let’s continue to sing, for though our sins are ever before us,

In Christ, God now sees us as clean!

    sing praises with a psalm!”

CONFESSION OF SIN – Martin Bucer

As we are reminded in our singing that Jesus Christ now rules and reigns in heaven,

Lets also take a moment in our service now to confess our sins before the Lord and ask for his forgiveness and grace. Please pray aloud with me this confession of sin written by the reformation pastor Martin Bucer.

(everyone aloud)

“Almighty, everlasting God and Father, we acknowledge and confess that we indeed were conceived and born in sin and, therefore, inclined to all evil and slow to all good; that we unceasingly transgress your holy commandments, and corrupt ourselves more and more. But we are sorry for this and desire your grace and help. Therefore, have mercy upon us, most gracious and merciful God and Father, through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ. Grant to us and increase in us your Holy Spirit, so that we may recognize our sin and unrighteousness from the depth of our heart, feel true contrition and grief for them, die to them completely, and please you wholly in a new, godly life.

Amen.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON –  Romans 5:8-10

To all of God’s people who have turned from their sins and trusted in the finished work of Christ, God’s word assures us in Romans 5:8-10

“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.”

Let’s continue to sing, for through the blood of Christ,

we know that we have been reconciled to God!

Week 46

Baptism – Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior, the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to the believer’s faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Being a church ordinance, it is prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and to the Lord’s Table.

PRELUDE –

“All I Have is Christ” by Anchor Hymns

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 30:4-5

“Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints,

    and give thanks to his holy name.

For his anger is but for a moment,

    and his favor is for a lifetime.

Weeping may tarry for the night,

    but joy comes with the morning.”

Let’s stand together and sing,

for the mercies of the Lord are new every morning!

SONG –

CONFESSION OF SIN

After King David is confronted about his sin with Bathsheba,

He cries out to the Lord for mercy in Psalm 51:1-3 saying:

“Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
    and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is ever before me.”

Here, in Psalm 51, David gives us a template of what God’s people need to do when we are weighed down by the guilt of our sins. Just as David cried out to the Lord in the midst of his guilt, so also you and I can cry out to the Lord for his mercy even in the midst of our guilt. Let’s take a few moments now to silently deal with our guilt before God and ask him once again to forgive us and renew us with his cleansing mercy

(moment of silence)

SONG –

Give us Clean Hands” by Charlie Hall

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Psalm 32:1-5

“Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
    whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,
    and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away
    through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
    my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

I acknowledged my sin to you,
    and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
    and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.”

Let’s continue to sing, for we know that in Jesus Christ, God has forgiven the iniquity of our sins!

In his hand are the depths of the earth;

The heights of the mountains are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it,

And his hands formed the dry land.

And we are the people of his pasture,

And the sheep of his hand.”

CONFESSION OF SIN

As we reflect on the goodness of God in saving and caring for his people,

Let’s also take a moment to reflect and repent of our sinfulness despite God’s mercy and care. Please pray aloud with me this written confession of sin:

(everyone aloud)

“Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent; according to Your promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. Grant that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life; to the glory of His holy name.

Amen.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Romans 5:6-8

“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his life for us in that while we were still sinners, Chris died for us. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.”

Let’s continue to celebrate God’s mercy, for through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has reconciled his enemies to himself and saved us from our sin!

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – IBC Statment of Faith Paragraph IV. Of The Way Of Salvation Why Of The Week

(everyone aloud)

We believe that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace; through the mediatorial offices of the Son of God; who by the appointment of the Father, freely took upon him our nature, yet without sin; honored the divine law by his personal obedience, and by his death made a full atonement for our sins; that having risen from the dead he is now enthroned in heaven; and uniting in his wonderful person the tenderest sympathies with divine perfections, he is every way qualified to be a suitable, a compassionate, and an all-sufficient Savior.
