CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 113

“Praise the Lord!
Praise, O servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord!
Blessed be the name of the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore!
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
the name of the Lord is to be praised!
The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens!
Who is like the Lord our God,
who is seated on high,
who looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.

Praise the Lord!”
Let’s stand and praise the Lord!

CONFESSION OF SIN – John Calvin

(everyone read aloud)

Lord, you are our Father and we are but dust and filth; you are our Creator, and we are
the work of your hands; you are our Shepherd, we are your flock; you are our Redeemer,

we are the people that you have purchased; you are our God, we are your inheritance.
Therefore, do not be angry with us to correct us in your fury. No longer remember our
iniquity to punish it, but chastise us gently in your kindness. Your wrath is kindled
because of our demerits; but remember that your name has been pronounced over us
and that we bear your mark and standard. And continue, rather, the work that you have
begun in us by your grace, that all the earth might know that you are our God and our Savior.

Amen.

SONG –
“Give us Clean Hands” by Charlie Hall

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Micah 7:18-19

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity
and passing over transgression
for the remnant of his inheritance?
He does not retain his anger forever,
because he delights in steadfast love.
He will again have compassion on us;
he will tread our iniquities underfoot.
You will cast all our sins
into the depths of the sea.

CONFESSION OF SIN – Psalm 32:5-7

In Psalm 32:5-7, David writes,
“I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Therefore let everyone who is godly
offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found;

surely in the rush of great waters,
they shall not reach him.
You are a hiding place for me;
you preserve me from trouble;
you surround me with shouts of deliverance.”

Let’s take this time in our service to pray and ask the Lord once again to hear our confession of

sin and forgive us of our iniquities.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – 1 John 5:13-15

The apostle John assures God’s people in 1 John 5:13-15 saying,

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that
you have eternal life. And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything
according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know

that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”

Let’s continue to worship, for we know that God has heard our prayers in Christ!

Week 15

Mosaic covenant – The Mosaic Covenant is a conditional covenant made between God and the nation of Israel at Mount Sinai (Ex. 19-24). Centered around God’s giving His divine Law to Moses on Mount Sinai, the Mosaic Covenant is unique because it is conditional in that the blessings that God promises are directly related to Israel’s obedience to the Mosaic Law. If Israel is obedient, then God will bless them, but if they disobey, then God will punish them (Dt. 28). The Mosaic Covenant itself, with all its detailed laws, could not save people. It is not that there was any problem with the Law itself, for the Law is perfect and was given by a holy God, but the Law had no power to give people new life, and the people were not able to obey the Law perfectly (Gal. 3:21). The Mosaic Covenant is also referred to as the Old Covenant (2 Cor. 3:14; Heb. 8:6, 13) and was replaced by the New Covenant in Christ (Lk. 22:20; 1Cor. 11:25; 2Cor. 3:6; Heb. 8:8, 13, 9:15, 12:24). The New Covenant in Christ is far better than the old Mosaic Covenant that it replaces because it fulfills the promises made in Jeremiah 31:31-34, as quoted in Hebrews 8.

CALL TO WORSHIP – Psalm 100

“Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

      Serve the Lord with gladness!

      Come into his presence with singing!

      Know that the Lord, he is God!

      It is he who made us, and we are his;

      we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

      Enter his gates with thanksgiving,

      and his courts with praise!

      Give thanks to him; bless his name!

      For the Lord is good;

      his steadfast love endures forever,

      and his faithfulness to all generations.”

Let’s stand and give thanks to the Lord this morning,

For his steadfast love endures forever!

Come Praise and Glorify” by Bob Kauflin and Tim Chester

CONFESSION OF SIN – From the Book of Common Prayer 1552

God’s Word calls all sinners in Isaiah 55:7 to forsake their sin and return to God knowing that he will abundantly pardon. As we gather for worship this Sunday, let’s once again heed God’s call and return to him, asking once again for his forgiveness and mercy. Pray with me this confession of sin aloud.

(everyone aloud)

“Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done, and there is no health in us. But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore those who are repentant, according to your promises declared to mankind, in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.”

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – 1 John 1:6-9

“If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Let’s continue to sing, for through the precious blood of Christ, God has cleansed his people from our sins!

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – IBC’s Statement of Faith Paragraph V Of Justification

(everyone aloud)

“We believe that the great Gospel blessing which Christ secures to such as believe in Him is Justification; that Justification includes the pardon of sin, and the promise of eternal life on principles of righteousness; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer’s blood; by virtue of which faith His perfect righteousness is freely imputed to us of God; that it brings us into a state of most blessed peace and favor with God, and secures every other blessing needful for time and eternity.”

CONFESSION OF SIN – Joel 2:11-14

“The Lord utters his voice
    before his army,
for his camp is exceedingly great;
    he who executes his word is powerful.
For the day of the Lord is great and very awesome;
    who can endure it?

‘Yet even now,’ declares the Lord,
    ‘return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
    and rend your hearts and not your garments.’
Return to the Lord your God,
    for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;
    and he relents over disaster.
Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
    and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
    for the Lord your God?”

Let’s use this moment of silence to confess our sins to the Lord,

And humble ourselves before the day of his judgment.

(moment of silence)

SONG –

Come Ye Sinners Poor and Needy” by Fernando Ortega, John Andrew Schreiner, and Joseph Hart

ASSURANCE OF PARDON – Psalm 32:3-5

“The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. . . . He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.”

Let’s continue to sing, for God in Christ is gracious to his people!
